# Museum Catalog Note
This issue of Beadle and Adams' dime novel series (No. 183, 1871) contains the complete text of Night-Hawk Kit; or, The Daughter of the Ranche, a frontier romance by Jos. E. Badger, Jr. The narrative follows Captain Kit, a young, well-armed leader who recruits a band of outlaws from a hidden camp in Texas prairie timber to ambush and rob an expected cattle-drover carrying gold. When the target arrives, he is revealed as Uncle Josh Crane, an older, respected local figure whom Kit's lieutenant wrongly identifies as Kirk Dalton. The story pivots on this mistaken identity, with Crane intervening to defend Kit from his own gang's violence. The work combines frontier adventure with elements of banditry, mysterious identity, and conflict between outlaw brotherhood and broader community loyalties.
