# Catalog Note

"The Masked Avenger; or, Death on the Trail" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham is a frontier adventure tale set in southwestern Texas. The narrative opens with an encampment of approximately one hundred outlaws led by Dante, a charismatic criminal of thirty-five who fled west three years prior. Tension escalates between Dante's lieutenants: the brutal, red-haired La Roche and the youthful, fair-complexioned Ford Balfour, whose competence La Roche questions. Their quarrel erupts into a pistol duel arranged by Dante, but before combat commences, a mysterious masked horseman on a black steed fires from a hilltop, killing La Roche with a single rifle shot. The masked figure, clad in black velvet and armed with an extraordinary arsenal—rifle, revolvers, lance, boomerang, bow and arrows—observes the outlaws from a rocky outcropping, his steel mask concealing his identity entirely.
