Idyl, the Girl Miner; Rosebud Rob on Hand (No. 2 of the Rosebud Rob novels) by Edward L. Wheeler presents a Western gambling narrative set in Hayward City's notorious "Full Hand" saloon. The story opens with a high-stakes poker game between a dark-featured Spaniard (Joaquin Jr., son of the famous bandit) and an English aristocrat, Lord Byron Cavendish. After losing his money, Joaquin stakes his young son against Cavendish's hundred dollars. He loses the wager. Baltimore Bess, a notorious frontier dare-devil, confronts Cavendish but respects Joaquin's code against backing out of bets. The Englishman exits with the child as Joaquin departs in anguish. A dandyish newcomer subsequently collides with Cavendish at the door. The narrative combines elements of frontier adventure, gambling melodrama, and family tragedy.
