# New York Ned in California: The Brothers of the League

When rangers capture Manuel de Castro, a Mexican spy, Ned interrogates him under torture (suspension by thumbs) until De Castro reveals he was sent by "the Brothers of the League"—the organized criminal band responsible for the murders and robberies terrorizing the district. The narrative emphasizes frontier justice, personal vengeance, and Ned's courage despite his prior eastern misfortunes.
