# Marsh Mose and His Dog: The Swamp Guide
by Walter Norris McNeill
This serial adventure opens aboard the merchant ship Ellinor, homeward-bound from Liverpool. Captain Vannier and his devoted daughter Ellinor are pursued by the pirate vessel Ocean Scourge. Despite the crew's efforts—led by the faithful seaman Will Brande and accompanied by the outspoken Irish maid Bridget Flaherty—the ship is disabled in cannon fire. Captain Vannier is mortally wounded. Will Brande defends Ellinor but is beaten senseless; both captive and attendant are taken aboard the pirate ship. The narrative employs melodramatic conventions: violent action interspersed with sentimental dialogue, threats of death, loyal retainers, and comic Irish dialect. Bridget provides relief through her fearful exclamations and resistance to her capture, while the captain's last moments emphasize paternal devotion and family tragedy.
