# Catalog Note

This issue of Beadle and Adams' story weekly (No. 396, August 1891) contains "Longshore Lije: A Story of Adventure on Land and Lake" by C. Dunning Clark, serialized in chapters. The narrative opens with a quarrel between idle eighteen-year-old Ned Norton, son of the wealthy Squire Norton, and Lije Taylor, a resourceful fourteen-year-old orphan who supports himself and his grandmother through fishing and salvage work on Lake Ontario. During their heated dispute, Ned's gun accidentally discharges, wounding him severely. Despite their antagonism, Lije fashions an emergency tourniquet that saves Ned's life, then vanishes before receiving thanks. Subsequently, Lije's boat is destroyed by a tugboat. He then confronts Dirk Dark, a suspected smuggler who attempts to recruit him into illicit activities. Lije refuses and physically bests Dark in combat. The serialized tale combines adventure, social contrast, and character development across maritime and village settings.
