At Wolf Run, a notorious site where massive wolf packs congregate nightly, Gardner is ambushed by Dark Dan and the Wolves of Wake-Up—a band of hooded vigilantes. Dark Dan accuses Gardner of profiting through insurance fraud: Gardner's daughter Fanny poisoned herself (though Gardner claims innocence), and his son Grant died under suspicious circumstances at Wolf Run, yielding five-thousand-dollar payouts in both cases. Dark Dan, engaged to marry the wealthy mine-owner Miss Martha McKandlass, reveals Gardner made her his beneficiary.
