# Catalog Description

Edward L. Wheeler's "Jim, the Sport, in Wake-Up" follows Gerald Gardner, a well-to-do businessman arriving at the mining camp via trail from Arizona. At Wolf Run, a notorious site where massive wolf packs congregate nightly, Gardner is ambushed by Dark Dan and the Wolves of Wake-Up—a band of hooded vigilantes. Dark Dan accuses Gardner of profiting through insurance fraud: Gardner's daughter Fanny poisoned herself (though Gardner claims innocence), and his son Grant died under suspicious circumstances at Wolf Run, yielding five-thousand-dollar payouts in both cases. Dark Dan, engaged to marry the wealthy mine-owner Miss Martha McKandlass, reveals Gardner made her his beneficiary. Viewing Gardner as expendable, the Wolves bury him alive at Wolf Run, where he awaits death from wolves. A secondary narrative introduces Martha McKandlass, young orphaned mine owner managing Wake-Up's only profitable operations, who ironically sought a suitable husband through newspaper advertisement.
