This issue of Crack Shot Harry (Vol. XXIX, No. 865) features the first installment of "The Masked Rider" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham. Set during the American Revolution in New Jersey's Ramapo Valley, the story follows Harry Mountjoy, son of a loyalist English general. After his father presents him with a British Army commission, Harry passionately rejects it, declaring his allegiance to the American cause. This insult provokes Colonel Carter to challenge Harry to a duel. Harry accepts, fights at dawn with pistols, and kills Carter with a shot to the heart. The narrative then shifts to Colonel Conrad's American cavalry squadron, cut off behind enemy lines. A mysterious masked horseman appears, offers to guide them to safety through mountain paths, and leads them away from encircling British forces. The rider's identity remains concealed.
