The Boy Gold Hunter: Navajo Nick's Scout by T. C. Harbaugh is a Western adventure tale serialized in this Beadle and Adams publication. The narrative follows Navajo Nick, a sixteen-or-seventeen-year-old prospector seeking fortune in Arizona, who encounters a peculiar frontiersman calling himself "the Boss Cactus." Nick suspects the stranger of treachery when he witnesses the Cactus releasing a carrier pigeon with a message, believing it directed to enemies. Nick flees toward Mohave City on his horse Black Mahomet.

A week later, Nick arrives in town wounded—pursued by roughly thirty Navajo warriors, struck by an arrow during his escape from Red Canyon. Rescued by townspeople and a bearded giant called Captain Flash, Nick seeks a man named Dagobert who was supposed to help him strike it rich, but learns Dagobert is not in Mohave. Flash offers Nick shelter in his dwelling to recover from his injuries.
