The Mad Miner; or, Dandy Rock's Doom: A Thrilling Story of the War for the Valley of Gold by G. Waldo Browne appeared in this November 24, 1886 Beadle and Adams dime novel. The adventure serial features Dandy Rock, a wealthy Texan miner of Gold-dust Valley, and his companion Alpine Luke, the Unlucky Miner. When Native Americans capture a maiden ("Mountain Rose"), the daughter of a Californian, and prepare to burn her at a stake, Rock and Luke negotiate her release by raffle. Luke draws the short straw and sacrifices himself, shot to death by the captors before Rock rescues the girl. They then confront Buck Warner, Rock's mortal enemy and a desperado claiming thirty men to seize Gold-dust Hollow. A secondary chapter introduces "the Mad Miner," featuring two brothers, Seth and Charles Harlow, stopped by masked vigilantes called the Valley Guard while traveling toward Golden Cave. The narrative emphasizes frontier action, sacrifice, and conflict over mining claims.
