This issue of Beadle and Adams Weekly (Vol. 27, No. 98, published November 3, 1886) features "Nobby Nick of Nevada: The Scamps of the Sierras" by Edward L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick and Rosebud Rob series.

Set in the snow-covered Sierra Nevadas, the serial opens with a secret mountain hut where a criminal organization called the Bearded Brothers—numbered A through G and led by a mysterious masked woman named Marie the Unknown—operates a counterfeiting ring with telegraph communication to other gang locations. They discuss threats from "Grim Goblin," a mysterious avenger eliminating gang members, and receive a warning about the arrival of General Arlington (wealthy, vulnerable to forgery), the vigilante "Nobby Nick," and a government spy.

The narrative shifts to follow Nobby Nick himself, a jovial adventurer riding a clever donkey named Doxy through the snowy gulch. Nick intervenes in an attack on an elderly Indian called Stern Face, routing the white assailants with help from his resourceful donkey before introducing himself and heading toward Deviltry.
