The story centers on a gang of outlaws led by "Doc" Middleton camped at the Dead Pine, planning to ambush a gold-hunter's train carrying valuable horses, guided by the renowned boy ranger Nebraska Ned. While the outlaws await their target, a mysterious boy spy—the titular "Boy Demon"—is discovered in the tree overhead, then mysteriously borne away by a massive winged creature. Meanwhile, Nebraska Ned and his young companion Dick Rodman return from pursuing horse thieves, encountering an eccentric pair of characters—the tall, gaunt "Judge" Zelotes Prosper from Carolina and the portly "Professor" Carl Jimrack—who meet at a creek and immediately begin quarreling over a canoe, escalating to violence.
