The Night-Hawks of St. Louis

This issue of the pulp magazine features two serials by A. P. Morris, Jr. The lead serial, "The Night-Hawks of St. Louis," begins with domestic drama: Zella Kearn, a beautiful nineteen-year-old, lives isolated with her overprotective father Wilbur in a cottage outside the city. When young law student Hugh Winfield visits, romantic tension develops—he steals a kiss despite her resistance, then agonizes over his feelings. Meanwhile, Hugh's father Cyrus Winfield, a wealthy merchant, reveals to his son that he faces financial ruin. The second serial, "A Dare-Devil of Revenge," is titled but largely illegible in this excerpt. Both stories promise romantic and melodramatic entanglements typical of the era's adventure fiction.
