# Harky Dan & Co., Detectives: A Story of Raiding the Rainbow Mine Rogues
Beadle and Adams dime novel, 1896
John W. Osbon's serial follows the "Dandy Sport" Gilbert Goldspur, a stylishly-dressed detective investigating the Rainbow Mine mystery. Arriving in the mining camp of Red Gulch, Goldspur presents the bound, manic "Murat, the Mad Miner" to Mayor Jubal Strong, claiming to have captured him after attack in Purgatory Pass. However, Strong suspects Goldspur's true identity and purpose—the attacker had shouted the name "Alexander Stamm," the wealthy Rainbow Mine manager, suggesting mistaken identity and underlying conspiracy. When Strong's bullets drive away an assassination attempt on Goldspur, the mayor confronts the detective directly, demanding honesty. Meanwhile, the would-be assassin, "Weeping Mose," reports failure to Stamm at a secret underground cabin, hinting at broader criminal operations surrounding the mine.
