The Doomsday-Den Detective

In this detective serial by William H. Manning, newly promoted Detective Nathaniel Rand is assigned to arrest diamond smuggler Lucas Hammond at the home of Professor Jonathan Case (Doomsday Den). While maintaining surveillance, Rand discovers a murdered man in a nearby doorway with a deep head wound. A stranger found hiding near the body is arrested despite his protests of innocence. Upon examining the corpse by lantern light, Rand discovers the dead man wears a distinctive butternut-colored suit—Hammond's identifying clothing. The face has been disfigured, possibly by fire or explosion. Meanwhile, Rand learns that the legendary blind detective Gabriel Redaxe, once renowned for thirty years of service, now lives at Doomsday Den as a pensioner of the impoverished Professor Case. The investigation suggests complex connections between the diamond smuggling case and the mysterious house.
