Genteel Jim, Sport-at-Large by W.M. R. Eyster opens with Grey Burke awaiting the arrival of the stagecoach in Box Elder, seeking revenge against a man named Genteel Jim, who allegedly shot Burke's partner Dan unfairly in a gunfight. When the coach arrives with a wheel malfunction requiring repair, Genteel Jim emerges—a well-dressed, composed gunfighter who graciously assists an elderly blind passenger named Vallance and his young daughter from the coach.

Burke confronts Jim in the street, demanding a fair gunfight. Jim responds with contempt, refusing to take Burke seriously. When Burke draws his pistol, Jim leaps forward, wrestles Burke to the ground with superior strength and technique, disarms him, and leaves him unconscious. A shot fired during the struggle breaks a window of the Eureka Hotel. Jim calmly informs the landlord he'll cover the damage and proceeds inside for supper, leaving Burke senseless in the street.
