Beadle's Dime Novels, No. 843 (December 19, 1894). "Gabe Ganderfoot's Mississippi Man-Hunt" by Lieut. A. K. Sims opens a steamboat adventure serial. Two rival passenger vessels—the Princess (Cincinnati) and the River Queen (St. Louis)—race down the flooding Mississippi toward New Orleans. Colonel Jackson Mayport gambles with young Wintrop Scales, called the "Crescent City Sport," who has fallen for Mayport's daughter Fannie. To win the race, Mayport purchases and burns two thousand dollars' worth of bacon as fuel, dangerously overpressuring the boilers. The River Queen explodes catastrophically. The Sport survives, swept underwater by driftwood while attempting to rescue the screaming Fannie Mayport, and awakens marooned on a mudbank, alone and uncertain of others' fates.
