# "The Man from Texas" by Joseph E. Badger, Jr.
This dime novel serial follows Emory Fitch, a young man in St. Louis, who encounters Dr. Harlow Dangerfield, an army surgeon and friend of his father, Captain Alfred Fitch. Dangerfield reveals he carries a dangerous trust—a package from Emory's father containing wealth recovered during a military engagement. The doctor shows puncture holes in his chest from a dagger attack aimed at obtaining the package, which he successfully resisted.
Dangerfield explains that he and Captain Fitch recently pursued the smuggler and bandit Vincente Gayferos along the Rio Grande border. After killing Gayferos in a firefight, they discovered a substantial treasure: money and cut diamonds that Gayferos had been carrying. Rather than surrender it to the Government, they divided it as private citizens on leave, with Fitch entrusting his share to Dangerfield for delivery to his wife. The mysterious assassination attempt suggests dangerous parties seek the stolen treasure.
