The Man-Mystery of Moonstone by Captain Howard Holmes opens in a Moonstone saloon in the Colorado mountains. Silver Steve, a well-liked sport, defends his friend Wun Look, a one-eyed Chinese man, from abuse by the gambler Buzzard Ben. A Mormon missionary named Solomon Olds arrives seeking his runaway wife, bonding with Ben over mutual contempt for Chinese people. After Olds and Ben leave together, Wun Look is brutally attacked—his remaining eye torn from its socket. Steve and Diamond Don, another sport, find him collapsed at Don's door. The injured Celestial, unable to identify his attacker despite the "soft" hands, vows to discover the culprit. Don insists Wun Look remain at his house to recover. The narrative suggests a connection between Solomon Olds's arrival and the mysterious assault.
