# Hydrabad, the Strangler; or, Alethe, the Child of the Cord
A serialized novella of jungle and bungalow life by Dr. J. H. Robinson, appearing in this June 18, 1879 issue (No. 70) of the Beadle & Adams weekly.
The opening chapters establish a tale of danger in British-occupied India. Chapter I depicts Hydrabad, a Thug assassin who stalks eighteen-year-old English beauty Ida Macgregor beneath a banyan tree with garroting cord, intent on strangling her. Lieutenant Neal Kavanagh, a British officer, intervenes in their struggle. The Thug escapes after firing Kavanagh's own pistol and vanishing into the jungle, declaring they shall meet again. Chapter II introduces Major Rainbold, Ida's guardian, a bluff military man whose ward recounts her escape. Kavanagh warns of widespread sepoy rebellion during the Indian mutiny, describing massacres of English women and children and the pervasive danger threatening all British residents throughout India.
