This 1891 Beadle & Adams dime novel, by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, continues the exploits of Buck Taylor, the "Saddle King." The main narrative follows Taylor as Colonel Forsythe, a new frontier military commander, recruits him to eliminate the reorganized bandit gang "Tiger Tom's Terrors." Taylor had previously defeated their leader Tiger Tom Tracey in a lariat duel; now Forsythe tasks him with identifying and eliminating the new outlaw leadership. A parallel narrative introduces Tiger Tom's widow, a commanding and well-armed woman of refinement who tends his grave at the remote "Haunted Mission" ranch—a fortified location built on Spanish colonial ruins. A third section shifts to the Mississippi River, where a young woman of Spanish descent named Valerie observes a magnificent giant among riverboat gamblers.
