# White Wings of the Waves: A Romance of Lawless Flags
This serial by Col. Prentiss Ingraham depicts maritime adventure and romantic intrigue. The narrative opens with young Clover, a fourteen-year-old cabin boy aboard an American brig-of-war, earning promotion to midshipman after heroically defending his captain against English boarders. Following his captain's death, hostile officers and midshipmen orchestrate his flogging and arrest. Clover leaps overboard and deserts. Concurrently, in a Mexican port, two schemers—Captain Urbana and Señor Escalon—plot against an American naval officer who has won the hand of the wealthy Senorita Rachel Ravera, a Mexican nobleman's daughter. They intend to ruin him through a false cheating accusation and challenge him to a duel. Meanwhile, Senorita Rachel awaits her father at his hacienda but encounters instead a mysterious dark-faced stranger arriving by goleta, who appears to harbor hostile intentions toward her.
