Through his ruminations, Bestor's tragic past emerges: his family was ruined by the wealthy Gregory Vance, who also forced the man he loved into marriage. Bestor killed Vance in a duel and was exiled to piracy under "Pierre the Pirate," acquiring an armed schooner with an African crew. After rescuing Miriam's brother Carter from execution (Carter had been falsely convicted of the Vance murder), Bestor sailed away with his ship. The narrative then shifts to the Gulf of Mexico's Bay St. Louis and Castle Moro, where the villain Don Juan Moro—actually Pierre the Pirate in disguise—plots against the Grayburst family. Years prior, Moro kidnapped their son Gordon and orchestrated the death of Gaston Grayhurst through the manipulated duellist Shannon Vere. Moro now intends to marry the widowed Mrs. Grayburst to complete his revenge.
