This is the opening of "Six-Foot Si's Clean Sweep," a western adventure serial by Philip S. Warne in Beadle & Adams' dime novel publication (October 24, 1888). The story concerns the recovery of a lost mine cipher document and revenge for murder in a lawless frontier camp.
Bob Cady is murdered and robbed by his partner Joe Moran, who flees to the criminal stronghold of Bloody Run with the valuable cryptogram. Beth Crawford, Cady's sweetheart, pursues Moran seeking vengeance, but the heroic Six-Foot Si intervenes to prevent her from committing murder herself. After a desperate escape, Si carries the unconscious Beth to safety in Mulligan's Bend. Moran, shot by Hank Budlong's band in anger over his swindling them, is left severely wounded. Old-Man Crocker, a rival power in Bloody Run, nurses Moran back to health, keeping his motives secret even from the camp leader Dandy Dave. Moran lies bedridden under Chippy's rough care, while Crocker calculates his next moves, hinting at future confrontation.
