"The Game at Ground Hog" by Wm. R. Eyster features stagecoach action and frontier mystery. Stage driver Uncle Pete narrowly avoids bandits attempting a holdup near Bumble's Bar mining town but loses control when a wheel gives way, wrecking the coach. Among the injured passengers is Horton Graunt, a fine-looking man traveling incognito. Young Le Roy Morton, another passenger, recognizes Graunt and tends his injuries, learning Graunt is a hunted man. Graunt reveals he has spent years pursued by a vengeful rival who attacked his home in Northern New York, killed his wife, stole gold, and kidnapped his infant daughter Ethel. Believed dead, Graunt survived to search for his lost child. He asks Morton to help locate Ethel and protect her inheritance, offering payment for assistance. Morton agrees to aid him.
