# "The Relentless Shadower: A History of the Willard Mystery"
By Jackson Knox (credited as "Old Hawk"), this detective serial follows retired policeman Stephen Gray and his daughter Edna. While on a summer retreat near White Plains, New York, Edna becomes lost on a country road and stumbles upon a secluded estate. Seized by inexplicable dread, she flees an approaching carriage and discovers four masked men burying a corpse—an elderly miser murdered by the criminal Red O'Meara and his associate Frank Harper, with laborers Swart and Timmins completing the deed. Edna witnesses their plans to flee to Belgium and Uruguay before they discover her hiding place. Captured and bound, she faces imminent execution, though Harper and Swart hesitate to kill the innocent young woman. O'Meara demands her death while the other men debate, creating tension over her fate.
