Beadle's New York Dime Library No. 470

This issue of Beadle's Dime Novels (No. 470, October 26, 1887) features the serialized Western tale "Yank Yellin' Fiery Gantlet" by Wm. H. Manning, continuing in Chapter II subtitled "The Duke of Dakota."

Buck Hampton, traveling to Big Missouri, is shot at by an Indian named Tommy Bowlegs but escapes unharmed. He meets Yank Yellowbird, a celebrated frontier scout and mountaineer, who warns him of danger ahead. The two discuss Pythagoras Pike—called "His Majesty, the Duke of Dakota"—an eccentric philanthropist attempting to establish a tannery at Big Missouri staffed by Sioux Indians, a scheme Yank believes will end in conflict. Hampton is traveling to visit his friend Walter McPherson, who is engaged to Pike's daughter Zora. The narrative introduces other townspeople including the suspicious Bart Lawless ("Black Hills Bart"), as Hampton and Yank approach the village nestled where the Racer River flows past hills and prairie.
