# The Great Detective's Double Trail

This serial by Captain Howard Holmes, subtitled "The Lost Angel Mine," opens in a well-furnished room in Deadwood, Dakota Territory. Young mine-speculator Colonel Cupid (Leon Talbot) briefs his associate Deadwood Duke—a tall, imposing tracker—on a critical mission: locating the Lost Angel Mine, a fabled bonanza believed to exist in the Black Hills. The prospector Blake Barton, who mysteriously possesses the mine's secret, has vanished into the mountains along with his daughter Coralie. Talbot suspects Barton carries a diagram revealing the mine's location and intends to beat a competing Eastern syndicate, represented by the legendary detective Captain Coldgrip, to the discovery. Duke departs to begin tracking Barton. Coralie unexpectedly arrives at Talbot's house in distress, having escaped the mountains; she reveals her father was forcibly taken from her, though she glimpsed his secret diagram. Talbot, calculating his advantage, resolves to extract full information from her. Meanwhile, Talbot seeks out Jacinto Jack at a Deadwood gambling establishment to gather intelligence on the mysterious Coldgrip.
