The opening chapter of this serial by J.C. Cowdrick introduces Jim, a six-foot-six, red-haired giant from Jimtown Lode who wears mechanical rooster wings across his shoulders and brags incessantly about being a fierce fighter. Arriving in the town of Ante-Bar seeking alcohol, he discovers the town has gone dry—no alcohol sold anywhere for six months. The local saloon proprietor Bill Twicker explains the town eliminated liquor to solve problems of crime and poverty, with the jail now empty and plans for a church underway. Jim then asks for a man named John Jones, learning that the town's Alcalde is indeed that name—though there was also a "Giant John" who has been hanged for murdering Judge Hucklebee. Jim reveals himself as Giant John's brother and demands details about his brother's execution, drawing his revolvers to force testimony from the attorney present before agreeing to listen to Bill Twicker's full account.
