"The Wrecker Witch of Death Island" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham is a pirate adventure serial set in the Gulf of Mexico a century prior. A young American Navy midshipman, pursued by bloodhounds and a giant antagonist on a remote island, escapes in an unusual coffin-shaped vessel. He discovers it equipped with a skeleton suit and skull mask; when a pirate schooner approaches, he dons the costume and lights the craft's eerie lantern, causing the superstitious crew to flee in terror, believing him the legendary "Death Craft." Desperate and alone on open water, the youth uses the disguise repeatedly to frighten away fishing vessels that might have aided him. The narrative shifts to a South Sea shipwreck twenty years earlier, where a mutinying crew destroys a brig during a storm. As survivors attempt escape from the companionway, savage warriors clamber aboard the wreck, discovering three survivors—a man, his wife, and child—whose ship had been seized by mutineers.
