Tracked from the Rockies to New York, by Albert W. Aiken, is a frontier adventure serial in this issue. The narrative follows Dick Talbot—known as "Injun Dick," a seasoned mining-region protagonist—working a placer-mining claim in Colorado with his veteran partner Joe Bowers. They share their camp with Leander "Limber Bee" Beaverwick, a whisky-addled miner, and Beaverwick's reserved wife Alethea. When Limber Bee returns drunk from town and accuses Talbot of attempting to seduce his wife, he draws a pistol and threatens to kill him. Bowers intervenes by hurling his frying pan at Limber Bee, disarming him and allowing Talbot to physically overpower the would-be murderer. Talbot nearly strangles Limber Bee before releasing him, compelling a tearful confession: campground gossips had poisoned Limber Bee's mind against Talbot. The extract ends with Talbot expressing moral contempt for his assailant's weakness.
