· January 13, 1886

This serialized adventure story by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, titled "Afloat and Ashore," opens with a prologue featuring a skilled young huntress living on a rocky Atlantic coast. She discovers a merchant brig anchored dangerously in Devil's Punch Bowl and swims out to warn the handsome young captain, whom she pilots to safety through treacherous reefs. The captain gives her a bloodstone seal ring bearing the motto "Semper fidelis." That night, she swims back through a storm to warn him that Crazy Wolf, a local Indian chief, plans to attack with armed men to capture the vessel and its cargo. The captain arms his crew and readies cannons. When Crazy Wolf's boats approach during the storm, the captain fires a six-pounder loaded with grape shot, sinking one boat and forcing the others to retreat. The narrative emphasizes maritime adventure, nautical skill, and romantic tension between the protagonists.
