# Broadcloth Burt, the Denver Dandy; or, The Thirty Pards of Deadwood

By Captain Howard Holmes, this western serial follows the arrival of an elegantly dressed stranger in the rough mining town of Deadwood. When a well-groomed man in expensive broadcloth and lavender kid gloves steps from the Denver stage, the local toughs mock his dandified appearance. Paradise Paul, a rough Deadwood denizen, recognizes him as a fellow stage passenger but initially dismisses him. However, when a Mormon missionary named Timothy Tenwives—previously tarred and feathered by the townspeople—appears at the Setemup Hotel, the stranger reveals himself as Broadcloth Burt and warns Tenwives away in a whisper, causing the terrified Mormon to flee. At the hotel desk, Colonel Sandbanks, the proprietor, notes that Tenwives has already registered. The Deadwood crowd grows anxious about the Mormon's return and his intentions regarding the town's women, while Burt's true purpose in Deadwood remains unclear.
