In Chapter I, Montana Nat Tyrrell intervenes when ruffian Ben Hatcher harasses a girl outside a Cheyenne saloon. Tyrrell kills Hatcher in self-defense; Hatcher's brother Rube vows revenge. Chapter II shifts to the prairie, where Tyrrell discovers an emaciated, delirious young woman. He recognizes her as his sister Rose, who has been abandoned by a man named Marshall Walters and has lost her memory. She doesn't recognize Nat and fears him, having been told he would kill her. Tyrrell places her in safety, vowing vengeance against Walters. Chapter III introduces Mark Wedderburn, manager of the Last Chance Mine, receiving a visit from investor Abijah Duncome and his daughter Celerity, an overdressed young woman from the East.
