· September 21, 1881

This serial installment, "Captain Ironnerve, the Counterfeiter Chief; or, The Gipsy Queen's Legacy," by Marmaduke Dey, concerns Lorna, a gipsy girl of sixteen, and her dying grandmother Vega. The aging Queen curses Lorna with a deathbed legacy: to find her father, a man named Gordon or Gordon Crandyl, who seduced Lorna's mother years ago in Virginia and abandoned her. Vega dies at sunrise after making Lorna promise to seek him out and claim her rightful inheritance. Following cryptic instructions, Lorna signals at the Sighing Pine and meets Baldo, a mysterious old man living within the hollow tree. Meanwhile, Ralph Gordon, a hunting visitor to a nearby lodge, has spotted the beautiful Lorna in the forest and remarks on her presence to himself, suggesting connections to the search plot.
