At the Rathskeller beer hall, a mysterious French aristocrat, Count Emil St. George, confronts a Prussian Red Cap student named Karl Kapp over an offensive song about Blücher. St. George challenges Kapp and three companions to a duel à l'outrance (to the death) at dawn in the "Court of Death," a notorious dueling ground among castle ruins. St. George is described as a deadly swordsman called "the Demon Duelist" who predicts two opponents will apologize. The narrative introduces a rival duelist known as "Devilshead" (Graf von Steinmark), also expected at the ruins. St. George expresses intent to face him. The story details Heidelberg's student corps system, their elaborate etiquette, and the distinction between "regular" duels (regulated, scarring) and à l'outrance contests (fatal, using sabers or small-swords).
