# Catalog Note
The Border Detectives; or, The Big Wipe Out at Hermit-Dome by Oll Coomes presents a western adventure serial. Old Tom Rattler (the "Red River Epidemic") and One-Armed Phil, a young one-armed miner, ride through a canyon where they encounter Wild Gypsy, a fearless fourteen-year-old girl who shoots the cup from Rattler's hand and kills a catamount threatening them. After cryptically warning them of approaching outlaws called the Red Vultures, Gypsy vanishes. The bordermen also glimpse a woman's face mysteriously reflected in a spring before the outlaws arrive. The story concludes with a chase sequence as Rattler and Phil flee on horseback, Rattler boasting of his fighting prowess and his horse Comet's speed. The narrative blends frontier dialect, action sequences, and frontier character types typical of the era's pulp westerns.
