Beadle's Dime Library No. 109

· November 24, 1880

This issue of the pulp weekly contains the opening installments of "Captain Kyd, the King of the Black Flag; or, The Witch of Death Castle" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. The serial begins with two ruined Irish castles overlooking a bay: Castle Cor, grand seat of the Earl of Belmont, and Castle Crag, home of his younger brother Hurtel. When Hurtel's beloved Lady Lenore abandons him for the Earl's wealth and title, Hurtel becomes a reclusive, tormented figure. On the anniversary night of Lenore's marriage, as Castle Cor hosts a celebration, Hurtel rides his vicious horse Red Satan into a violent storm and is swept into the bay. Meanwhile, Gipsy Jule—the "Surf Angel" renowned for rescuing shipwrecked sailors—watches the festivities from outside, her ambitions and mysterious past hinted at darkly.
