The Fugitive Privateer: A Romance of Ocean Trails by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham opens with the merchant brig Mermaid, captained by Norman Hurst, under pursuit by the pirate schooner Sea Torch during a violent storm. When Hurst is shot and mortally wounded, his eighteen-year-old daughter Sibyl takes the helm, skillfully navigating the vessel despite cannon fire and mounting seas. As night falls, a direct hit destroys the foremast, crippling the brig. When the Sea Torch's commander boards the damaged vessel, he reveals himself as Bianca Hurst, Norman's supposedly-deceased youngest brother, driven by decades of rage over inheritance and familial rank. The narrative establishes a conflict rooted in class resentment and fraternal vengeance, with Sibyl emerging as a capable, resolute protagonist caught between her dying father and his vengeful brother.
