Beadle's New York Dime Library No. 1088

· September 1904

This 1884 pulp magazine contains "Black-Hoss Ben; or, Tiger Dick's Lone Hand," a Western romance serial by Phillip S. Warne. The narrative follows Black-Hoss Ben, a buckskin-clad frontiersman and horse trainer, who encounters Beatrice Holyoke—a dark-haired aristocratic woman—and her ailing father John at a mountain inn. Ben rescues the invalid and impresses Beatrice with his magnificent black stallion, Black Diamond, performing acrobatic feats on horseback. Beatrice learns Ben is called "Tiger Dick," a name suggesting a criminal past he wishes to reform. When the Holyokes depart for Robert "Demon" Dukes's ranch, Ben vows to win Beatrice's love and abandon his former life. Their coach is subsequently attacked by masked road-agents during a thunderstorm; a silent stranger passenger returns fire, initiating combat. The narrative combines frontier action with romantic tension and moral redemption themes.
