The Fire-Eater

· April 2, 1878

This catalog entry for Beadle and Adams publisher is actually a combined catalog page and opening chapters of The Fire-Eater: The Texan's Revenge by Edward Willett. The first portion lists the publisher's "Popular Dime Hand-Books" across multiple series: Dime Speakers (recitation collections), Young People's Series (etiquette guides, letter-writers, games), and Dime Dialogues (performance pieces). The fiction narrative follows Charles Archer, a mysterious young man of medium height and confident bearing, in a rough Texas barroom where he witnesses a card game between Rube Warnick and Rafe Stinson. Archer intervenes to identify cheating, sparking confrontation. He demonstrates extraordinary skills: precise pistol-shooting, knife-throwing, and sleight-of-hand tricks including swallowing and regurgitating a bowie knife. A beautiful young woman named Nell briefly appears from a back room, warning him. After charming the rough patrons with his abilities, Archer retires upstairs with his companion Tophet (a large Black man) and his dog Wolf, troubled by thoughts of Nell's face.
