The Privateer's Bride

Β· June 12, 1877

This issue presents "The Privateer's Bride: The Channel Scud" by J. R. Caldwell, a maritime adventure serial. The American privateer Sea Gull, having raided British shipping for two years across the Indian Ocean and coastal waters, encounters a catastrophic Atlantic storm while entering the Bristol Channel. As the vessel approaches rocky breakers with no hope of passage from hostile British onshore observers, an unknown figure signals from a distant castle with a lantern. Irish pilot Terrence O'Toole interprets the signals, guiding the ship through a treacherous rock passage to safety through skillful navigation. Captain Warfield refuses to lower his American flag despite potential rescue, declaring it shall sink with the ship rather than surrender to British mercy. The crew survives the harrowing escape and gives thanks for deliverance.
