# Catalog Note: Merciless Matt; or, Red Thunderbolt's Secret
By Captain Charles Howard. Published by Beadle and Adams, New York, this dime novel recounts a frontier narrative of vengeance set in 1813 Alabama. The story opens as settler Matthew Dean discovers the smoking ruins of Fort Mimms, massacred by Creek Indians. Finding his wife Kate, two sons, and daughter Myra slaughtered among the ruins, Dean buries his dead and swears a blood oath to become a merciless avenger against the Creek nation. A dying neighbor, Zeke Hartman, provides fragmented accounts of the attack before expiring. The narrative frames the Fort Mimms massacre (August 30, 1813) as precipitating a broader Indian conflict. The second chapter begins with discussion of the historical circumstances surrounding Tallushatchee. The text emphasizes the graphic brutality of frontier violence and Dean's descent into single-minded revenge following personal tragedy.
