This 1870 Beadle & Adams dime novel, The Trapper's Last Trail by Joseph L. Henderson, follows a young man lost on the western prairie after separating from an emigrant caravan. The narrator, a college-educated easterner who departed St. Louis with his friend Harry Sprague seeking to cross the great plains, becomes separated while hunting deer. After walking in circles all day without food, he finds himself alone at nightfall on the open prairie. Despairing but not entirely hopeless, he resolves to wait until morning. During the night, awakening from a frightening dream, he spots a distant campfire and, seizing his gun, moves toward it, discovering only an abandoned blaze with no visible human presence. The narrative emphasizes survival, self-reliance, and the perils of the western frontier.
