This is issue No. 283 of The Dime Speaker and Dime Dialogues series (Beadle & Adams, 1878), featuring The Man-Hunter; or, The Counterfeiters of the Border by Marc O. Rolfe. The serialized adventure opens in Iowa territory circa 1855 during an era of border crime. The plot centers on Keno Taine, a rough borderman hiding near a ravine, who ambushes Joles De Kay with blackmail. Taine has discovered De Kay's involvement in counterfeiting currency alongside Tom Gary and Harney Barmore—a capital crime in vigilante territory. Taine coerces De Kay with threats of exposure to the Vigilantes (who execute counterfeiters) unless De Kay convinces his reluctant daughter Evie to marry Taine. De Kay, a widower and drunkard whose deceased wife Bertha once urged reform, faces a stark choice: secure his daughter's unwilling marriage or face hanging. The narrative establishes a frontier crime melodrama centered on blackmail, counterfeiting, and forced matrimony.
