Rainbolt, the Ranger

This Beadle and Adams dime novel presents Rainbolt, the Ranger, a Western adventure by Oll Coomes, set in 1869. The story begins with two villains meeting in Omaha: Duval Dungarvon, a notorious Black Hills robber-captain, and Blufe Brandon, a renegade Cheyenne chief called Black Bear, conspiring to kidnap Colonel Wayland Sanford's daughter Silvia for ransom. When the colonel's party—including his daughter and four young men (relatives Willis and Frank Armond, attorney Walter Lyman, and physician Ralph Rodman)—boards a Union Pacific train bound for San Francisco, Brandon executes the plot. Using signal flashes from mountain peaks, he orchestrates a staged Indian attack that stops the train, allowing him to abduct Silvia into a dark canyon. Colonel Sanford, recognizing Dungarvon from Omaha and drawing on his frontier military experience, pursues the kidnappers. The narrative shifts to a night camp in a wooded valley where two men keep watch, beginning the rescue action.
