Beadle's New Dime Novels: Rangers of the Mohawk

· October 25, 1881

This 1868 dime novel by Edward S. Ellis follows "The Rangers of the Mohawk," a tale set during the American Revolution's siege of Fort Schuyler in 1777. General St. Leger besieges the fort defended by Colonel Gansevoort against British forces, Tories, and Six Nations Indians. General Herkimer's relief force is defeated and routed at Oriskany. The narrative introduces Walter Sutter, a Tory captain, and Honyost Schuyler, a half-witted informant from Cherry Valley, who reveals that Captain Heath—a patriot officer and rival for Edith Gordon's affections—lurks nearby with an Oneida companion. Butler, jealous and intrigued, seeks to capture Heath. Captain Butler also circulates Colonel Butler's proclamation to Cherry Valley inhabitants, attempting to rally Tory support while hunting for escaped fort messengers. The story interweaves military action with romance and frontier intrigue.
