The Mohegan Maiden

The catalog advertises multiple instructional handbooks (speakers, dialogues, etiquette guides, cooking manuals, chess instruction) published at ten cents each, followed by the opening of "The Mohegan Maiden: The Stranger of the Settlement" by James L. Bowen, set during King Philip's War in 1676 New England.

The story features Archibald Turner, a young English colonist orphaned in America, and his Indian companion Christian (also called Hawk's-wing), a Mohegan brave whose life Turner saved from a bear attack and scalping attempt by a Narragansett warrior. The narrative establishes their friendship through Turner nursing Christian's wounds and Christian subsequently converting to Christianity. The excerpt concludes with an alarm: after the men cook fish by the river near Hadley, they hear Narragansett war cries and witness three warriors capturing a fleeing Native American woman, taking her prisoner before disappearing into the forest.
