The East Side Spotter; or, Turning Down the Big Three: A Story of Wiping Out the Hole-in-the-Wall Wolves by Wm. Perry Brown appears in this 1896 Beadle and Adams weekly. The tale follows Rube Rawlins, a seventeen-year-old country boy from Pike County, Missouri, newly arrived in New York City. Turned out penniless by his uncle Eben Rawlins, Rube encounters street life's dangers: a pickpocket steals his fifteen cents; a gang robs him again. Seeking refuge, he returns to his uncle's house via the alley. Inside, he finds his uncle murdered—a dagger buried in his neck. Jennie, the household servant girl, descends and accuses Rube of the crime, claiming the uncle had warned her the boy was not his genuine nephew. The narrative combines urban crime melodrama with rural-versus-city contrasts, establishing mystery elements for continuing chapters.
