# Catalog Note

"Tulip Tilly's Trump Hand" by Edward L. Wheeler, serialized in this Beadle and Adams dime novel (July 30, 1895). Deadwood Dick Jr. and his companion Nancy Jane are pursued through Devil's Gulch by prospectors from the camp at Reilley, who mistake Dick for a man named Doc Dalton. The prospectors seek Dalton because he allegedly knows the location of a hidden box of money belonging to Job Welcher. After a tense standoff behind boulders, Dick negotiates with Ben Welcher, son of Job, but Nancy Jane mysteriously disappears leaving only a note reading "See you later." When Dick calls for the men's help, they betray him, capture and bind him, planning a lynching. Nancy Jane's disappearance proves prescient—she suspected a decoy. The narrative follows Dick's transport to the lawless mining camp of Reilley, where gunfights rage in the streets and lynch justice prevails.
